ASJ2015

On 7 March 2015, Aula Simfonia Jakarta presented the work of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Sibelius, under the baton of Dr. Billy Kristanto and William Savola. The chosen piece from Tchaikovsky was from the renowned ballet “The Swan Lake”, composed in 1876. For the first time since its establishment in 2009, Aula Simfonia Jakarta presented the classical orchestral piece together with ballet presentation. The ballet was brought to you by, yours truly ballet.id dancers, and students from Ballet Sumber Cipta.  The tickets to the 1,200-seat Concert Hall was fully sold, and it was full house.

The ballet presenting the excerpts from Swan Lake opened the concert. The first part was the Waltz from Act 1 of Swan Lake, adapted into pas de deux with the accompanying little children as corps the ballet. After that, the second part of the excerpts presented the renowned theme of Swan Lake, which was actually the opening of Act 2. The excerpts from Act 2 continued with the White Swan pas de deux, where the prince met the Swan Queen for the first time. In this difficult piece, the female lead ballerina has to present a very sad and delicate adage that demands strength and grace of dancing on pointe. The whole audience was gripped into emotional silence of the dance. Then, the famous Dance of the Little Swans followed, which is quite a challenging piece that demands harmonious fast movements between the four dancers. The presentation continued with presenting the Black Swan pas de deux, in which the deceitful black swan won over the Prince’s heart by pretending to be the white swan. In here, the black swan was able to present a deceitful aura that captured the attention of the audience. The Swan Lake excerpts presentation was concluded with the Mazurka finale.

This show was one of the very few performance that featured ballet and live orchestra in Indonesia. We feel that we learned a lot in the process, especially how to work with the orchestra, and how to nail a ballet piece that is technically challenging together with the orchestra. We are thoroughly thankful to Dr. Stephen Tong to push the classical music and ballet initiative by Aula Simfonia Jakarta into reality, and kudos to Dr. Billy Kristanto for leading the orchestra beautifully in a collaboration with the dancers. Also a big thank you to Ms. Ade Setiowibowo and Mr. Edmund Gaerlan for their support during the practice sessions, and Ballet Sumber Cipta for the collaboration with their amazing students.

I have discovered this website on 11/19. I shared the concert: Sibelius’ Finlandia and Symphony No. 2. Dr. Tong was not available.
I have come to Indonesia 30 times in 28 years and continue to support the lives & higher education of four as “daddy” in Lombok.”

Ozi, one of my anak angkat, is completing his Masters Degree in Jakarta & meets with Cultural Minister, Nadeam Makaram weekly.
Nadeam will sponsor my travel to Indonesia and my visit in Jakarta. If Dr. Tong is available, please forward this email to him.
I may be able to come to Indonesia in January.

I am interested to guest conduct again and will do so “gratis” as needed in 2021-2022. I have guest conducted on four continents. My baton belonged to ArturoToscanini. Mischa Mischakof, former CM of the NBC presented the baton publicly to William Savola..
